Theater Dortmund in Germany is reviewing its rental agreement for the Chinese dance production Shen Yun following a critical report by German satirist Jan Böhmermann. The show, scheduled for April, is organized by Falun Gong, a religious movement that has faced allegations of labor exploitation and ties to right-wing propaganda.
Böhmermann’s investigative segment on ZDF Magazin Royale raised concerns about Shen Yun, as it claimed that some performers are minors who may be subjected to exploitation. The report also highlighted Falun Gong’s alleged role in spreading disinformation.
While the theater initially understood Shen Yun as a cultural performance, it now states that the organization’s values are in conflict with its commitment to diversity, democracy, and human rights. However, because the event is bound by a legally valid venue rental agreement, there is currently no legal basis for cancellation. Theater officials are consulting legal experts and city authorities to explore possible courses of action.
For now, Shen Yun remains on Theater Dortmund’s schedule, though its future at the venue remains uncertain.
